Abstract |
Food packaging plays an indispensable role in ensuring the quality of food products. The food packaging materials currently used are nondegradable and create severe environmental issues as the ecological sustainability role of the biodegradable packaging materials is centralized around its role to take part in the cycle of nature "from nature to nature" as a part of environmental sustainability. These factors drove a tremendous technical progression in recent years and produced a considerable diversity of food packaging materials, especially in bio-based packages. Biodegradable food packaging materials have different characteristics, and it is increasingly used to mitigate the use of plastic packaging made with petroleum resources. Different biodegradable packaging materials are classified based on the source of the materials into three main categories: natural biopolymers, polymers from bio-monomers, and microorganisms' polymers. This chapter sheds light on different biodegradable polymers used for food packaging production, focusing on their characteristics and role in sustainability in the circular economy. |
