Abstract |
The Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7 of the United Na-tions, averring clean and affordable energy, urges the world to adapt to renewable energy technologies; a major such technol-ogy is solar photovoltaic (PV) panels. Presently, the increasing trend of solar panel establishments and potential waste pro-duction at the end-of-life have exacerbated the electronic waste (e-waste) situation necessitating the need to recycle these e-wastes for, 'cleaning of this cleaner energy'. This study draws on the recycling status of solar PV panels in countries such as Bangladesh as well as South and Southeast Asian countries. The study revealed that recycling trends in these countries are in their nascent stages. Especially since the established solar panels have not reached a recyclable phase yet considering the 20-25-years life span of the panels. However, it is only a matter of time before the overburden of such wastes may bore on these countries (as waste generated globally is estimated to be 78 million tons by 2050). As a result, we implore upon the necessity of policymaking, properly defining these wastes, employing proper establishments and groups to recycle the waste, and subsequently adhering to a circular economy model in the solar panel establishments for environmental safeguard. |
