Abstract This review offers a global overview of the status of laws governing sustainable food packaging materials. The review highlights the regulatory framework for several sustainable packaging options, including paper-based packaging, compostable materials, and biodegradable plastics. The review focuses on the European, Indian, South Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Australian, British, and American regulations. Generally, the trend towards sustainable food packaging legislation is anticipated to continue, with more nations and regions putting policies into place to cut waste and encourage a circular economy. This will probably spur the development of new environmentally friendly packaging materials and motivate companies to use greener methods.
