Abstract Given the current technological development of the modern world, higher operation and exploitation of new unconventional resources and potential reserves, it is highly unlikely that current situation of 'energy security' will continue to be stable. Because of the increasing greenhouse gas emissions, rising oil and petroleum prices, diminishing fossil fuel resources, causing a lack of energy security, the recent scientific interests have focused on the search of alternative and sustainable renewable energy from microalgae. Algae are the alternative raw material for bioenergy due to their high photosynthetic efficiency and rapid growth. Green algae are able to grow in places and areas with infertile land. The cultivation of microalgae can be performed in a photobioreactors, raceways or in greenhouses. Using the by-products (digestate) generated during the process of anaerobic digestion we can create a year-round system for the cultivation of microalgae, which will in turn be used as a raw material for the biogas plant. Thanks to such application, the biogas plant can be more 'self-sufficient'. This new innovative process can provide a prerequisite scale for increasing commercial use of bioenergy from microalgae. However, there is a need to find a reasonable way to produce algae biomass to meet all ecological and economic requirements.
