Abstract Supplementary cementitious materials can contribute to the reduction of global CO2 emissions generated in cement production. The literature still lacks conclusive studies on the feasibility of using waste glass wool powder, considering mechanical properties, alkali-silica reaction and reduction of CO2 emissions. Aiming to contribute to this scientific advancement, this research aimed to evaluate the use of ground glass wool residue as a complementary cementitious material in applications involving cementitious mortars. The characterization of the glass wool was carried out by laser particle size distribution, X-ray fluorescence and pozzolanic activity index by Modified Chapelle. The cementitious mortars were subjected to thermogravimetry, FTIR, heat of hydration, porosity, compressive strength and alkali-silica reaction tests. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy were also carried out on glass wool and cement mortars. Cement samples were produced with 0.0%, 10.0%, 17.5% and 25.0% replacement of cement with powdered glass wool, using cylindrical and prismatic specimens. The results of compressive strength and pozzolanic activity index showed the pozzolanic capacity of powdered glass wool. All cementitious samples showed alkali-silica reactions below 0.2%, proving the non-existence of this damage. The reduction of microstructural pores and heat of hydration was obtained with cementitious samples containing glass wool. The studied residue can be used as additional cementitious material, reducing CO2 emissions and making cementitious mortars more durable.
