Abstract Pyroprocessing holds the key to unlocking a more sustainable future for nuclear energy by handling various types of spent nuclear fuel (SNFs) and reducing radioactive waste volumes. This review examines the role of electrochemical monitoring in molten salt pyroprocessing of SNFs, emphasizing its importance in enhancing process efficiency and nonproliferation. Challenges associated with the monitoring of multi-element environments, flow environments, and sensor stability are discussed. The review suggests that integrating sensor technology with artificial intelligence could lead to significant advancements in the field.
