Abstract |
In the last decades, plastics have succeeded on the market to a degree that produced volumes have grown tremendously. Since appropriate end of life management has not kept up globally, the waste problem has escalated. In a circular economy, on the other hand, plastics are not deposited in the environment as waste or burnt yielding CO2, but avoided in single-use applications and reused as a material or raw material. Since there are many dependencies, the sustainability of every step of a circular economy must be systematically considered in relation to the entire cycle, including energy demand and emissions. The further development of dedicated - potentially complementary - recycling processes, along with further innovations in sorting and design of materials and products, will be key to closing the cycles for plastics in a sustainable manner. |
