Abstract Indian economy has been on a rollercoaster ride in last decade where International Monetary Fund (IMF) stated that India is in the midst of a significant economic slowdown which needs urgent policy actions. These changes also got reflected on the Indian consumer behaviour trends with drastic polarities in urban and rural consumers. In this context this paper discusses "Remanufacturing" as a suitable alternative strategy at the inception of a product life cycle where product is designed for remanufacturing from the start to hold the consumer interested in product for a longer time with considerable returns to the original manufacturer. The paper highlights Remanufacturing architecture and its effect on sustainable product development with a detailed roadmap for implementing Remanufacturing in Indian Small & Medium scale industries (SMEs).
