| Abstract |
Selection of wastes in order to reprocess them presents environmental and social benefits. The aim was to analyze public policies to increase recycling rates of domestic urban solid waste and minimize the use of landfills in Cape Town, South Africa, a reference in integrated management of solid waste, among middle income countries, and in the inclusion of scavengers. Method: Field work, including: (i) 5 technical visits in treatment plants, triage centers and final disposal sites of solid waste; (ii) interviews with persons responsible for selective waste collection; (iii) analysis of technical documents and scientific literature. Results: In Cape Town, waste collection with sorted materials is done in part of the territory for organic and inorganic/dry waste. Services have been steady since the beginning of the programs, with reflects in the efficiency, because organic and inorganic wastes are recycled and processed, reducing use of landfills by 30%, a high percentage among cities in similar social and economic situations. |
