Abstract |
The new building for the Vocational Schools for Color and Design in Munich (BSCW) differs from classical building construction projects with "out of the box " solutions. The article gives insights into the structural design, numerical modeling, important milestones of the construction site, as well as considerations on resource efficiency and circular construction with composite structures. Hybrid structures that combine steel, concrete and steel-concrete composite elements can make an important contribution to resource efficiency by using their constituent materials in a functional and efficient way. The wide-span and integral structure with the prominent, visible steel trusses as load-bearing structure on the first floor, combines the advantages of just-in-time erection, high prefabrication rate with greatly reduced structural deadweight. Numerical modeling, load path determination and structural design are of decisive importance. Structural design, modeling and resource efficiency are central tasks that require creativity and the courage to explore new, unfamiliar paths. We structural engineers have to play a decisive role. |
