Abstract The modern (petro)chemical industry has supported substantial development but uses unsustainable fossil resources detrimental to the Earth's ecosystem via climate change and chemical pollution. This commentary highlights how catalysts can support development of critical fuel and chemicals manufacturing using sustainable waste resources to transition the industry from a linear to a circular economy.
