Abstract Architecture developed when humans decided to settle, beginning with vernacular architecture that influenced many subsequent concepts. In sub-Saharan nations, the notion of bioclimatic architecture has garnered a growing amount of interest from numerous stakeholders at various levels. Adopting bioclimatic design, which is the most appropriate for these developing countries, may facilitate the shift to more sustainable building practices. However, bioclimatic architecture has several obstacles to its successful acceptance and spread in the built environment of sub-Saharan Africa. Therefore, this article aims to systematically evaluate existing literature to determine the implications, issues, contributions, and challenges of bioclimatic design in the sub-Saharan construction industry. This study examines the bioclimatic approach to architecture, its impact on contemporary design, and its limitations in the sub-Saharan African building sector. It also suggests a new pathway towards an adaptive bioclimatic architecture approach based on a circular economy and multi-scale approach. An adaptive bioclimatic architecture framework for buildings is presented. The main problems for bioclimatic architecture adoption determine future research direction, frameworks, and approaches to develop toward adaptive bioclimatic design. This review will assist the relevant stakeholders and decision-makers implement more sustainable and locally adapted buildings in sub-Saharan countries.
