Abstract This mini -review deals with recovering inorganic value-added products from wastewater, i.e., nutrients (like nitrogen and phosphorous compounds) and metals, emphasizing its reuse as a commodity in the industry from a circular economy perspective. The use of electrochemical technologies to recover inorganic matter from municipal and industrial wastewater is presented with examples. The electrowinning of heavy metals and nutrients from hydrometallurgical and sewage treatment plants is a success story. The power of electroprocesses and their challenges for recovering inorganics and water from effluents are discussed.
