Abstract |
This study explores the Total Waste Management (TWM) methodology's role in promoting a Circular Economy and achieving Zero Landfill status in a Brazilian tourist park. The research is driven by the urgent need to conserve natural resources, requiring strategic waste management systems to combat landfill expansion. Despite the tourism sector's "clean" image, it contributes a staggering 35 million tons of solid waste annually. Using a qualitative approach, the study focuses on a pioneering Brazilian park that has achieved "Zero Landfill" certification. Four semi-structured interviews and ATLAS.ti software analysis demonstrate TWM's effectiveness in waste disposal, enabling integrated waste management, improved segregation, and waste transformation into new products. Nevertheless, practical implementation in tourist parks demands customized adaptations, including alignment with environmental management plans, legal considerations, and visitor awareness initiatives. Thus, while TWM offers a practical pathway to "Zero Landfill" status, its full realization requires collaboration with various external stakeholders. |
