Abstract The development of a solution for the reuse of cork waste is studied, by forming a coating for a cotton textile material, integrating principles of sustainability and circular economy. Cork is a material widely used to make stoppers for containers in the wine industry. Sustainable alternatives, such as the reuse of this type of waste, allow the development of high-potential materials that can be applied in various areas of product design. The methodology includes the design of a coating based on cork and Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) in the laboratory and a user study to determine aspects of perceived quality, based on Kansei engineering. User evaluations are positive regarding the developed prototypes. The discussion raises the relevance of the design of emerging materials as an alternative to traditional materials, as is the case of the material resulting from the experience carried out. The conclusions are oriented to the capabilities of cork as a resource in the field of material design and the design approach for its application diversification.
