Abstract Glass and plastic are currently the most commonly used materials for food packaging and consumption. Due to their characteristics, these materials become large pollutants of natural ecosystems, after their use and therefore cause serious environmental concerns. In this review solutions to these problems are discussed, by reviewing the literature and analyzing concepts that establish the future of these materials in the face of new global strategies for economic sustainability, vvhich uses these materials as tools for circular economy strategies. Furthermore, in this work, a historical analysis is made, the problem is dimensioned, the relationship between sustainable development and the circular economy is established, and a critical analysis is carried out by linking each of the actors of the problem and establishing whether the current solutions, both scientific, pedagogical and governmental, are effective or not. This work also suggests a new proposal based on information gathered by scholars and scientists, which sets out the future of materials in the strategy towards a circular economy.
