| Abstract |
Innovation is a factor of social and economic progress at the national level, as well as a driver of resilience and competitiveness. If countries want to advance towards a safe, environmentally friendly and prosperous society, it is important that they promote eco-innovation as one of the drivers of adaptation to current global challenges. The present paper proposes an empirical study on ecological innovation and economic development, analysing the official indexes and drawing a typology of European states according to their dynamics between 2010 and 2017. The statistical analysis uses three indicators: eco-innovation index, GDP per capita and employment rate. They were included in Analytical Hierarchy Clustering to highlight typologies of European countries in accordance with the dynamics and profile of their economic growth and investments in green technologies and activities. A special look was given to Central and Eastern Europe while measuring eco-innovation at the national level and making comparisons between countries while explaining the existing differentiations. The conclusions lead to the idea that the gaps between East and West are diminishing, but there are still institutional, legislative and economic shortcomings in eco-innovation that should be addressed. |
