Abstract The energy industry is undergoing a significant transition from fossil fuel to sustainable energy sources, driven by decarbonization, as well as the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals, such as climate action and affordable and clean energy initiatives. Energy transition needs to balance an energy trilemma problem among energy security (including reliability and resilience), affordability or equity, and environmental sustainability. The energy transition is at hand, but its success relies on our ability to adapt our aging power grid infrastructure to support the entire ecosystem around it. Innovation and the digital transformation of the grid substation are crucial to evolving our technology rapidly enough to meet the world's rising demands of green energy.
