Abstract The adoption of correct socio-environmental practices is becoming a necessary imperative in all sectors of the economy, including the banking sector. Through a qualitative, descriptive research, the present article analyzed how public banks innovate to incorporate sustainability into their business models, using the archetypes of a sustainable business model proposed by Yip and Bocken (2018). Interviews were conducted with managers of three bank branches, in addition to consulting secondary data, obtained through public reports published by the institutions from 2013 to 2018. The results indicate that Brazilian public banks have important technological innovations for sustainability, some social innovations that seek to improve the quality of life of the population and the environment and organizational innovations that allow institutions to collaborate with sustainable development through the way they organize their activities.
