Abstract Sustainable development involves a complex and long-term action within any organization. This approach is shared by all processes, and the overall goal is to maintain a long-term equilibrium and resource utilization in a balanced manner. The concept of sustainability has seen various interpretations and adaptations depending on the economic period and business requirements. In literature there are many definitions and frameworks, but there is no general tool for evaluation available. This paper presents the evolution of the concept of sustainability, the evaluation of literature (from the conceptual perspective and models used in practice), and finally it presents the archetypes of business models that are used to guide their organizations towards sustainable development.
