Abstract The philosophy of circular economy discuss the frame of transforming the wastes and the used or abandoned materials into an exploitable resource, by "green" pathways to recover, recycling and reuse them, both in the same area of applications, or in new ones. The leather industry is known to produce large amounts of wastes, which were massively neglected until now. By processing 1000 kg of raw bovine hide, 750 kg of waste results, most of them as untanned hide waste, and 590 kg of them contain proteins forms. Our work presents practical methods to turn leather industry solid wastes into valuable sources of chemical compounds and products, thus promoting leather processing to the sphere of circular economy, and adhering to the desideratum of zero wastes. Some of our results in recycling hides-derived chemical components are presented, together with the favorable implications of such an attitude. Specifically, protein forms recovered from hide waste, along with chemicals resulting from the processing of other types of industrial wastes (like those form titanium metallurgy), were used to obtain value added products for leather processing (pretanning / tanning).
