Abstract The green economy has been considered as the main vector on the way to sustainable development, taking into account relevant development priorities. The focus is not on the opportunities and green economy benefits for the sustainable development of developing countries, but rather on the challenges and risks associated with the transition to a green economy. Due to the fragmentation and narrow focus of research on the meso- and micro-level, the article examines and systematizes the risks associated with the introduction of green technologies and innovations at the macroeconomic level in developing countries and countries with economies in transition. Based on allocation of four generalized groups of innovations to risk sources, and considering the simplified model of consumer goods, the authors analyzed the formation of "green economy" risks. Key reasons for the low efficiency of innovative "green" technologies were identified. Special attention is paid to the identification and differentiation of the causes and consequences of the manifestation of the "rebound effect" in the application of innovative "green" technologies, taking into account the projection on different categories of benefits.
