Abstract Building smart cities requires educational programs that would offer students an up-to-date knowledge to be gained by developing their practical skills and, especially, by means of solving "living" problems. This paper presents a newly developed methodology of teaching students through research and creation of solutions that can be immediately implemented. The authors describe the suggested teaching approach by presenting a case study in which the problems and solutions of a real city, Belgrade, are explored. Students developed an online survey with questions addressing the main problems in the city. The citizens' view of the problems in the city was the basic input for students in designing a new smart city concept. Compared to the traditionally trained group of students, the satisfaction with the teaching results of the newly trained 126 students divided in two groups, was higher.
