Abstract In a case study of possible development in the city quarter Old Brno, the potential of this city area is shown. I address some weak spots such as undeveloped plots, historical gap sites, brownfields or the use of watercourses in the city, which are typical for many Czech cities and villages. Hypothetical urban structures have been designed following contemporary trends, which are based on the theory of smart city and classic housing construction. Master degree students of ARC FAST VUT focusing on the subject of spatial planning actively participated in this study and design of the area in question which culminated in the participation in the Brno Municipal Intervention event during which part of Porici Street was closed and a public space was created for one day in front of the Masaryk University in Brno. In my article I describe in detail both the urban study of the city quarter of Old Brno, the activity of the students and the subsequent reaction of the public.
