Abstract The term "smart city" has gained significant traction in academia and industry. However, research on smart city lacks a systematic understanding of the smart city performance evaluation. This study analyzes the relevant literature and proposes conceptual insights. Bibliometric methods are used for an extensive discussion of the literature. The systematic literature review indicates that previous studies have mostly focused on evaluating smart city performance from a technical perspective. However, there is still a lack of comprehensive evaluation systems based on multiple dimensions. In addition, previous research stayed at the logical interpretation of indicators, the mechanism of indicators was not explained. Considering that evaluating smart city performance from a technical perspective may cause potential problems at other levels to be ignored, it is necessary to carry out a multi-dimensional smart city performance evaluation.
