Abstract |
Internet of Things (IoT) evolution transformed modern cities into smart cities. As smart cities are becoming part of our everyday lives, it becomes essential to address challenging communication issues that are present, such as the intermittent connectivity, the link asymmetry and the indirect line-of-sight. In this work we propose an adaptive solution that employs interchangeably Named-Data Networking (NDN), Delay/DisruptionTolerant Networking (DTN) and NDN-over-DTN (NoD) to compensate reliability issues and enable the seamless smart city network operation using the Software-Defined Networking (SDN) technology. The implemented system has been deployed and validated in the CityLab test-bed, a real smart city network located in Antwerp, Belgium. The evaluation results show that our adaptive protocol solution outperformed the single NoD scheme in terms of Content Retrieval Delay, Interest Satisfaction Ratio and Cache Hit Ratio. |
