Abstract The internet of things (IoT) has been an emerging concept since the last decade. This concept has impressed various technologies in the world. IoT has provided interesting modern solutions in various fields so that it has convinced many companies, organizations, and entities to invest in IoT technologies. One of the significant usages of IoT is in smart cities which facilitates the execution of various services for people. This integration of IoT in smart cities requires a fair cognition of the prerequisites, infrastructure and the architecture of IoT for this purpose. It is noteworthy that the architecture of IoT in smart transportation is less investigated. In addition, the components of IoT are introduced and their applications in smart cities are elaborately discussed.
