Abstract In this paper is presented a new method of collecting data that are part of a smart road traffic monitoring system in the context of a smart city. Starting from the real case of an intersection in the city of Petrosani our research expanded to creating a model for road traffic monitoring and metering system using several categories of interconnected sensors based on a LoRa wireless network, which can be customized to any configuration of intersections in any city. There is presented the main principle of this system and the mathematical model as well as a simulation in the MatLab environment. The results will later serve in the traffic flow management process. The need for a road traffic monitoring system lies in the fact that these days, the number of cars has increased exponentially, but the streets and the entire transport infrastructure have not been created to allow rapid adaptation to their increasing number. Due to the constraints of the roads system infrastructure, more and more problems are being observed regarding traffic jams that eventually lead to material losses (time and money implicitly). In the context of a smart city, a road traffic monitoring system is the first step to be taken into account in order to implement solutions for the decongestion of car traffic arteries in order to reduce all the negative factors that impact also on the environment and implicitly on the lives of the citizens.
