Abstract The concept of smart cities has provided sustainable choi-ces, particularly in the context of smart utilities, by enabling connectivity and interaction with various devices to enhance the quality of life. This research aims to develop an optimization algorithm for the smart city monitoring system, with the aim of improving energy efficiency. This is accomplished by applying optimization techniques that effectively decrease the transmit power and spreading factor of the long range communication module used in the end nodes. In smart cities, optimizing energy usage during data transmission enhances long-term sustainability and cost effectiveness, especially for battery-operated systems, contributing to a greener and more efficient environment. The energy saving of the system after performing the proposed optimization technique is 63%. This letter contributes to the ongoing efforts toward building smarter and more sustainable cities, where technology plays a pivotal role in creating a better future for urban living.
