Abstract |
Internet of Things (IoT) is a heterogeneous network of interconnected things where different devices and technologies collaborate to offer services. Recently, smart city projects are gaining a lot of attention from the governments. Different applications based on IoT devices are used to improve the services for citizens. Opportunistic Networks (OppNets) are a category of Disruption Tolerant Networks (DTNs) characterized by intermittent connectivity between the nodes. Opportunistic IoT (OppIoT) network is a blend of smart devices and human mobility. Smart devices equipped with interfaces and buffers (pedestrian smart phones, buses on-board units) using the human mobility will enable the communication and send sensors data to the gateways. Gateways will be connected to Internet with cloud servers. The data received from the sensors and than send to the gateways should be for non time-critical applications. In this work, we propose the usage of OppIoT where bus transportation system, their mobility, pedestrians mobility create opportunistic contacts to build a smart city with a low cost. In order to reduce the cost, devices will use opportunistic communication and not the subscription cost to connect to the Internet and only the gateways will be connected. So, the optimization of the number of gateway nodes and their placement is needed. We conder a case study of Tirana city, Albania. Based on Geo-referenced public transportation data published from the municipality of Tirana city, we evaluated the minimal number of gateways and their position using different algorithms. The results shows that the proposed algorithm for minimal number of gateways performs better and three gateways are needed to offer coverage for all bus lines in Tirana. |
