Abstract Management of hazardous waste deals with the cost-effective, efficient, social, and environmental concern, and the concept of sustainability includes all of these issues. In this regard, new approaches are emerging to handle waste management according to the concept of smart city. In the current study, a mathematical model is developed for the hazardous waste location-routing problems to determine the best decisions in a hazardous waste Management (HWM) system. The proposed model aims to maximize the total profit of the HWM system and reduce the destructive effects of hazardous waste from the perspective of environmental and social impacts. In order to advance the efficiency and practicality of the proposed model, a solution method based on the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm III, a recently presented metaheuristic procedure, is applied to efficiency solve the problem. The current study takes into account the concept of Information and Communications Technology ICT and Internet of Things technology in hazardous waste location-routing modeling. In addition, some sensitivity analyses are implemented to assess the behavior of the model and extract managerial insights.
