Abstract Currently, the Internet-of-Things (IoT) is a highly effective and realistic wireless communication system concept. In this article, we have explored the vision of sixth-generation (6G)-IoT enabled communication networks for sustainable smart cities with our intelligent framework. The proposed framework consists of real-time sensing, computing, and communication systems. Further, we have emphasized the architecture and requirements of the 6G-IoT network in relation to the increasing demand for establishing sustainable smart cities. In addition, we describe emerging technologies for 6G in terms of artificial intelligence/machine learning, spectrum bands, sensing networks, extreme connectivity, new network architectures, security, and trust that can enable the development of 6G-IoT network architectures to ensure the quality-of-service/quality-of-experience that is large enough to support a massive number of devices. Moreover, we have highlighted potential challenges and research directions for future 6G-IoT wireless communication research for the sustainable smart cities.
