Abstract |
Smart City is the product of accelerated development of the new generation information technology and knowledge-based economy. The essential components of urban development for a smart city should include smart technology, smart services, smart industry, smart management and smart life. The Internet of Things (IoT) is an emerging paradigm focusing on the inter-connection of things or devices to each other and to the users. This technology is anticipated to become an integral milestone in the development of smart homes and smart cities. As population increases in urban areas, the generation of waste also increases which affects the lives of people. Proposed system aims to reduce the cost and time required for waste collection by implementing Internet of Things approach. The system shuts the lid of the bin automatically when bin capacity is reached which is found by use of ultrasonic distance calculation sensors. Once the lid is shut, a message is sent to the server side where decision making process is carried out. An alert message indicating the bin status is sent to the truck driver whose location is nearest to the full bin. Thus, the proposed system saves time and is cost efficient. |
