Abstract |
The Smart Cities concept implies the integration of vertical application pillars, such as mobility, smart grid and public illumination, and more, for an optimal management of the resources and a reduction of the energy footprint of large cities. This approach requires the use of existing heterogeneous communication infrastructures to allow a peer to peer interconnection of services exposed by sensors and actuators distributed throughout the city. Among the most promising approaches, it should be mentioned the Software Defined Networking (SDN) one, based on the use of a centralized SDN controller that dynamically configures the forwarding rules of data streams generated by devices in the field. The design of a dedicated SDN bridge, which is able to accurately distribute time to the end nodes and handle heterogeneous communication media, is needed when SDN are used in a Smart City. The aim of the paper is to investigate the time synchronization capabilities of different SDN bridge implementations using a low-cost platform. The first results highlight that an inexpensive, Smart City oriented, SDN bridge is able to distribute the time with a time synchronization extended uncertainty of 15 ns (coverage factor 3) using Transparent Clock configuration. |
