Abstract Digital technologies are becoming an integral part of society. The use of these technologies is most evident in cities. It is in these settlements that a large part of the population is concentrated, and socio-economic processes are actively proceeding. The engine of economic development, without a doubt, is the fundamental problem of satisfying the unlimited needs of people in conditions of limited resources. The paper considers the positive impact of digital technologies within the framework of the functioning of smart cities, expressed in the reduction of time to meet the needs of citizens and the emergence of time to unlock internal potential, increase labor productivity of employees of organizations, and the development of a shared consumption economy. The negative aspects of modern technologies, which include the inefficient use of the Internet and threats to human health and life, are also presented. In conclusion, a sociotechnical version of the interpretation of the term "smart city" from the point of view of meeting the needs of citizens is proposed.
