Abstract Paper deals with the smart city and smart public lighting concept and their characteristics. Furthermore, it deals with public lighting management system capabilities and interoperability between more public lighting systems, with possibility of implementation of standardized system for public lighting management in terms of smart city concept. Different manufacturers of public lighting use a lot of different software and hardware solutions for monitoring and managing of public lighting. Generally, this is not the best solution, because it is not likely that every public lighting network in one city will be from the same producer and with the same control protocol. Most commonly control network protocols with their characteristics are shown as well. Consequently, cities need one, main central management system that will be able to communicate and sum up information and data from all different management systems and display them on standardized software interface. Software provides layout of all luminaires and their basic information, but also enables optimization, light dimming, power consumption management and failure detection. Moreover, this paper describes analysis of profitability and return investment period by replacing old inefficient luminaires with energy efficient LED technology using smart system for monitoring and control of public lighting. Compared to outdated public lighting system, smart public lighting system is highly profitable in a few years.
