Abstract Smart cities are a global reality that demand smart infrastructure from the urban environment, making territories and regions unique. This demand provides opportunities for interaction between citizens, local government and other social actors. The objective is to understand how the urban-sustainable transport infrastructure is organized in global cities, investigating the concept of smart city. The research methodology used the Milan case study method, in Italy, associated with bibliographic and documentary research. The main results of the research led to the intrinsic relationships between high technology and sustainable thinking, reflected in the urban transport infrastructure (use and type of transport). In addition, global cities have the strategic role of global influencers, with urban-sustainable transport assuming different roles. The conclusion confirms that the infrastructure of global cities is partially based on sustainable thinking, as the war between Ukraine and Russia has severely impacted energy in the European Union. Sustainable thinking is, therefore, a fundamental basis for the development and application of sustainable urban transport, and from this thinking comes the application of intelligence in cities.
