Abstract Startup companies have experienced an extreme growth in the recent years. Popularity of innovative entrepreneurship, amount of investments into innovations and potential reinforcement of economic growth has attracted the attention of corporate sector as well as government institutions and local municipalities. Creation of suitable environment for innovative entrepreneurship and peculiar start-ups has become much more significant over the last 15 years. From the academic point of view, this topic is rather new. Regarding the local self-governments, the creation of suitable environment and concept of the ecosystem for startups represent only one of the many key issues of city's development. Smart city is another distinctive movement that comes to the core. The main question dealt with in this paper is to what extent the targets related to the implementation of smart cities concept relates to the process of start-up ecosystem creation. Is there any relation between the indicators observing the level of smart cities and the factors based on which the suitability of startup ecosystems are evaluated? The link between both concepts is assumed based on the close interconnection of both approaches and IT technologies and computerisation of natural environment of the given city.
