Abstract Many small cells are densely deployed in 5G mobile networks. The efficiency of conventional centralized radio access network (C-RAN) architectures is drastically deteriorated by the spatio-temporal fluctuation in mobile traffic demand. To address this issue, this paper proposes a concept of adaptive C-RAN architecture for smart cities with crowdsourced radio units (CRUs) mounted on parked vehicles. The advantages of the proposed scheme are high flexibility and low cost, because the distribution of CRUs follows the distribution of mobile users. The performance of the proposed scheme is confirmed with numerical analysis and computer simulations.
