Abstract The paper proposes a novel adaptive traffic light scheduling scheme based on two-way traffic-light-to-vehicle communication (TLVC). The target of the paper is to use VANETs technologies to prevent traffic accidents caused by the rapid growth in the number of vehicles worldwide. In the proposed scheme, if vehicles are detected in a yellow-light-dilemma (YLD) zone when traffic light's color is yellow, a traffic light rescheduling algorithm is executed and speed guidance messages are sent to the vehicles to prevent YLD-related accidents happening. The preliminary simulation results show that the number of traffic light violation case caused by the YLD problem is greatly reduced by approximately 63% to 84%, which consequently reduces the number of YLD-related accidents at signalized intersections.
