Abstract Governments around the world are promoting the establishment of smart cities by equipping their cities with intelligent devices such as IoT sensors to analyze the data generated by these devices. While smart cities offer ample opportunities for local governments to improve services for their citizens, cyber security has become a major concern for smart cities adoption, due to interconnectedness of intelligent devices and the use of public networks. Literature presents the significance of security models for the adoption of smart cities, but these are limited to identifying one or few security related factors. To investigate the security determinants by focusing on the user intentions to adopt smart cities, the Security-Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) framework and research hypotheses are presented. This study adopts a mixed method approach for data collection. The structural equation modelling technique will be used to analyze the data and the structural relationships between the measured variables and latent constructs.
