Abstract Around 65% of heat produced by car engines, whether gasoline or diesel, is wasted and released into the urban environment. The anthropogenic heat contribution of cars to the ambient environment makes them a major source of low-grade energy that has direct and indirect health impacts on pedestrians. Whereas there is a myriad of research that highlights the impact of cars on greenhouse gas emission and pollution indicators, the emitted heat of the cars has remained widely unexplored. In this paper, we present a novel method based on thermal images for analysis of traffic flow in urban roads as well as counting number of people for selected areas. To this end, we use infrared camera sensors to capture the thermal images and apply a Radon transform based method to summarize the data and assess the required information from time series of thermal images. As such, we use a single sensor for our analysis, which is both privacy preserving and not sensitive to visible light condition of the target areas.
