Abstract |
The Construction Industry (CI) is characterized as one of the largest generators of solid waste worldwide. In fact, is estimated that the construction and demolition waste (CDW) represent at least 30% of solid waste generated in the world. Recently, there is an increasing number of studies in the literature that include management strategies for CDWs. However, most of the research is carried out in developed countries and less so in emerging countries. So, the objective of this study is to identify trends and research gaps on CWD management. To achieve this goal, we carried out a systematic review following the PRISMA (R) methodology to the academic literature published in indexed databases between January 2010 and June 2022, followed by a bibliometric analysis using Bibliometrix (R) and VosViewer (R). This research established that eco-design plays a key role in reducing CDW regardless of the study region, an aspect that depends on the context between actors involved to promote industrial symbiosis. Additionally, it was found that there is a large gap between developed and emerging economies. Particularly, it was found that while the former has focused their research on estimating the resources generated and their environmental impact, decision-making processes, economic viability, recycling and eco-design, the latter have concentrated on making management proposals and evaluating recycling alternatives. Finally, further research to improve the estimation of the generated CWD offers an important contribution to construction management. |
