Abstract Thermal energy, which is produced in excess in the form of heat and cold in companies, is often released unused to the environment. Other companies, on the other hand, have a demand of thermal energy and have to generate it themselves or have to obtain it externally by a district or local heating network. A traditional district or local heating network provides heat to the connected user at temperatures above its use temperature. Such networks are exclusively geared to the tasks of supplying heat. High operating temperatures cause heat losses, which in particular reduce the cost-effectiveness in times of low heat demand. This paper deals with the basic concept of an intelligent heating and cooling network "Thermal Smart Grid" and describes the development of a network node station at the hydraulic and information level through various research projects and pilot plants. The aim is to reduce the use of primary energy and to use the raw materials more efficiently, which means a reduction in CO2 emissions and an improvement in efficiency.
