Abstract The increasing population density is placing increasing demands on city services and leading to the complexity of management of public transportation, infrastructure, and development of a sustainable economy. This paper reviews the background of big data and primary components and capabilities of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology. The purpose is to demonstrate the wide uses and varied implementations of GIS in smart cities with different characteristics. After analyzing several case studies of GIS modeling and big data applications, the paper builds a framework for engineers to work on the planning and design of smart cities. The results indicate that GIS and big data empower humanitarian projects and make smart cities sustainable.
