Abstract The marginalization of small Italian villages is the result of complex social phenomena such as the gradual depopulation resulting in the aging of the population and the economic impoverishment deriving of the progressive depletion of productive resources. In the presence of such phenomena, we cannot imagine recovery strategies providing only the restoration of the building fabric. It is necessary to implement interventions that consider the phenomenon globally, through the identification of new compatible uses, energy self-sufficiency, respect and appreciation of the identity characters. We propose interpretation methods of the potential of areas in order to evaluate design alternatives and consequently identify appropriate and compatible intervention strategies. The approach refers to the status of the architectural technology that considers the performance aspects of the built environment and the needs of the users according to a systemic point of view. Possible solutions are supported by the constant and essential use of the technological innovation, and control of sustainability of the interventions. In support of the argument, we analyzed case studies related to places of the foothills area of central and southern Italy.
