Abstract This work presents a low-cost environment monitoring system using IoT. Four novel subsystems are integrated into this smart system, which are considered as essential supporting pillars of a city. The smart city prototype includes the integration of a smart waste management system, smart street lighting system, smart pollution monitoring system, and density-based traffic controlling system. The waste management system based on IoT enables the concerned officials to examine the amount of garbage in the trash bins so as to provide timely collection before the bin overflows. Smart lights allow cities to ensure illumination of various locations based on lighting requirements. The smart density-based traffic control system overcomes the impact of traffic congestion including longer waiting times and delays in travel time which may cause traffic violations. A smart city can monitor and collect information on the environmental pollution which is transmitted to citizens and health department authorities. These four essential requirements of a city will be integrated by a smart management system connected through the cloud, that helps the data be available to all end users.
