Abstract As many cities in China and foreign countries are vigorously constructing smart cities, China is overheating in developing smart cities. To make the smart city development in China be more scientific and reasonable, this paper has summarized typical models of smart city development in China with literature research and comparative study methods. Smart city models can be divided into four categories: Technology-oriented, industry-oriented, service-oriented and environment-oriented. In addition, a comparative analysis on major objective, major strategy, major challenge and other aspects of the four models is undertaken. Meanwhile, an analysis on common problems existing in the four models is also conducted and corresponding strategies from a macro perspective are proposed. The study result will provide theoretical bases for smart city development in China and guarantee more scientific and reasonable models will be selected for constructing smart cities in China.
