Abstract The steel sector is deeply committed to the sustainable management of its by-products, to reduce the natural resources exploitation, its environmental impact, and to achieve its "zero-waste" goal. Within a dissemination project funded by the European Union, an analysis was carried out of the results of the most important European projects focused on reuse and recycling of by-products of the steel sector, both internally and in other industrial sectors, according to the principles of 'Circular Economy and Industrial Symbiosis. In this paper, which summarizes part of the work carried out in this project, an overall view of the main results achieved by the European steel industry on this issue and the synergies with other industrial sectors is provided. In particular, the impact of the results of innovative research was analysed, taking into account some significant aspects, such as level of practical application and achieved value, including economic and environmental aspects as well as the reasons for total or partial achievement of project objectives. Furthermore, the eventual obstacles to the full exploitation of the results achieved in the analysed projects and the potential follow-up have been identified.
