Abstract The advancements that have taken place in the field of smart meters, such as the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), and the Internet of Things (IoT), have made it possible for smart cities to be equipped with a variety of electronic devices. This way, smart cities have become more accessible because of the availability of technologies and equipment, with numerous elements becoming applicable. The goal of the present paper is to offer a comprehensive overview of the smart city concept, together with usage possibilities, advantages, and opportunities. Furthermore, the paper presents some of the IoT technologies with their combination possibilities and applications throughout various components of the smart city. Another aspect covered by the paper is the possibility of smart cities applications in terms of future technological advancement. An in-depth analysis of practical implementations around the world and their main drawbacks is presented.
